Week 15
Synthesis: Markov Processes

Source: Towards data science

Markov models

Markov models, like the one in the image above, combine:

  • Graphs (as you can see)
  • Probabilities (the weights on the edges),
  • Matrix multiplication (to model the dynamic behaviour of the system),
  • Logistic growth (which is a common pattern of dynamic growth in markov processes), and
  • Solving systems of equations (to find the equilibrium state).

It's a five star mathematical experience! And I hope an interesting way to end the course.

Course improvement survey

The course isn't quite over, but I'm already thinking about the next time I teach it, and how I could make it better. Please help me improve it! The things I do right in teaching are the result of suggestions and ideas from students. Answering the brief questions in this survey will directly affect how the course is taught next time. And it's good karma for you. 😇

Official course evaluation

There is also an official evaluation of the course YukonU uses for its purposes (the instructor, the chair or program coordinator, and sometimes the Dean of the school, all see them). It should be obvious in Moodle (I can't see where it is linked because I can't fill it out), and will be available until Wednesday. The course evaluation is completely anonymous. I read your responses to it carefully and thoughtfully, but the questions are not as immediately actionable as the ones on my survey above.

Almost done: 1 Exercise set, 1 Assignment, 1 Exam

You should have received an end of term marks report last night. If you didn't please let me know and I'll get it to you.

Exercise set 13 is due today.

Assignment 12 is due tomorrow.

The Exam is next Friday (April 23). There is lots of information about it in the Course materials.

Final office hours

I'm only planning to do office hours in my Zoom "office" today and next Wednesday (two days before the exam). But I'm also available for help over zoom by appointment. Just email me and provide a few times that work for you and we'll arrange something.

Good luck in all your exams!

Finish strong,
Tim
